Since biodiversity is
in danger in quite a few places in the world, conservationists have a lot to do
to meet the problems as a consequence of this. On the other hand, there are some
places where nature and the environment are well taken care of. It should be
wise to foster the environmental friendly activities at these places, and to
promote them as showcases, to understand the benefits of nature- and
environment-concious development.
Suriname is fortunately one of the places where the biodiversity has not yet
been jeopardized, although there are some dangerous activities in the gold and
the timber sectors. A very conscious governmental policy in this respect is very
welcome; it is well known that the government is aware of the need for this
policy and is willing to introduce the necessary measures to follow the right
course. Public awareness is also developing well, and should be promoted
carefully.
In order to create possibilities for developments and activities to promote the
conservation of biodiversity in Suriname, Conservation International created in
cooperation with the Surinamese government an environmental fund, the SURINAME
CONSERVATION FOUNDATION in the year 2000. | |
